It's Friday in San Francisco. The fog is behaving, the Giants crowd is buzzing (for one of the last games of the season) and your group chat has split into two camps. One side wants the Hi Dive, the old-school bar on Pier 28 tucked under the Bay Bridge. The other wants Fieldwork, the Berkeley brewery that just planted its flag at Mission Rock across from the ballpark.
They sit about a 15-minute walk apart along the water. So which one deserves your first round? We put them head to head in four rounds.
Round 1: The vibe
Hi Dive doesn't pretend to be anything else. It's a true dive, with a linoleum bar top and bright primary-colored booths that feel like your uncle's rec room (Punch). Back in the day, dock workers and sailors on shore leave drank here (Time Out). That history is baked into the walls.
Fieldwork is the shiny new kid. Its Mission Rock taproom opened in July as a 3,750-square-foot space, and the brewery calls it its most ambitious hospitality concept yet (BevNET).
Winner: Hi Dive. You can build a new taproom. You can't build 20 years of character.
Round 2: The drinks
Hi Dive is about strong pours at fair prices. The house move is the "PBR & J": a can of Pabst with a Jägermeister on the side (Punch). It's also a stop on SF Travel's Martini Trail, so the dirty martini crowd is well served (En Primeur Club).
Fieldwork is a beer lover's playground. The brewery is known for a deep, rotating list that leans hoppy (SF Standard), plus non-alcoholic options for the sober-curious friend.
Winner: Fieldwork. If beer is the mission, a brewery wins. Martini people, feel free to file an appeal.
Round 3: Views and outdoor space
Hi Dive has the back porch. It looks out over the Bay, and Punch calls that waterfront deck the reason the place became a local landmark (Punch). Bay Bridge lights at night, East Bay glittering across the water. Hard to beat.
Fieldwork counters with its China Basin Park Beer Garden next door, which turned into one of the city's busiest outdoor beer spots after it opened in 2025 (BevNET). Grass, sun, pints. Very civilized.
Winner: Tie. Hi Dive wins at sunset. Fieldwork wins on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
Round 4: The crowd
Hi Dive pulls regulars, tourists, and Giants fans. The Infatuation says it's the kind of bar where your buddy's eccentric uncle might wander in and pitch you his 3D-printed muffler idea (The Infatuation). That's free entertainment.
Fieldwork draws craft beer fans, after-work groups, and new Mission Rock neighbors. Expect fewer muffler pitches and more debates about hazy versus West Coast IPAs.
Winner: Hi Dive, purely for the storytelling potential.
The verdict
Final score: Hi Dive 2, Fieldwork 1, with one tie. But honestly, the right answer depends on your night.
